Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine something that you love to do. Now, imagine looking around you and seeing people who absolutely struggle with what you LOVE to do! I have the opportunity to help my students learn to LOVE WRITING! And here is how I will achieve my goal:

My students are a mix of struggling writers across the 5th grade.

In our very large, urban school, we have a melting pot of cultures. A large population of our students are first generation Americans. This poses a challenge with communication to their parents and community.

My Project

Having always been a lover of writing, I wanted to share my gift with my students. In the school's first ever, student-run newspaper, I am creating lovers of writing! Our student newspaper will also be the bloodline of news in our school. Because our school is so large, we often miss seeing the younger grades and their old teachers. We want to make connections and celebrate different groups and topics. Our students want to make news! I have requested several reporter notepads to enable the students to take notes during trips, interviews, and other areas of reporting. I have also requested paper, in our school color, to create our newspaper with. Our students are excited to use different kinds of technology as well to take notes in different forms. Since they are struggling writers, they will learn to edit themselves and their peers using something other than pencils! Giving them the tools and materials needed to create their newspaper will help them become powerful writers!

When students dislike certain subjects and topics, they sometimes fail to participate or feel motivated to do well.

With the materials in the this project, my students will feel important and actually feel like a reporter! In turn, they will perform and be motivated to do well! I appreciate your help in order to move my students further and make them motivated to do more! Becoming informed young citizens will create a better tomorrow for each and every one of them!
