Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Struggling readers often look for an excuse not to read. This is especially true if there isn't a good selection of books and reading materials to choose from. My sixth grade classes are composed of some very reluctant and struggling readers. They would rather do anything than pick up a book during independent reading time, nevermind reading at home.

One of the biggest problems I face is when I finally hook them in, I have too many students sharing one classroom library and never have enough books/materials to go around. Many times they get excited after I read an excerpt to them but then when it comes time to read the book themselves I never have enough for all who are interested.

I have slowly started building and expanding my classroom library with subscriptions to National Geographic and Sports Illustrated for Kids and collections of books such as the Harry Potter Series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid Series, Candy Apple Series, Percy Jackson Series, Chronicles of Narnia and Bone Series. Unfortunately it is not enough. I need more books to go around and draw them in and what better way to do that then by sharing with them some of my own favorite authors from childhood and others that are brand new and hot off the press! This is why I am requesting current issues of Time for Kids. I am tired of recycling older issues of news and events that are no longer current. I am also requesting books such as the Twilight Series by Stephenie Meyer and R.L. Stine's Goosebumps Horrorland. R.L. Stine has been a popular author for many years and I remember reading many of his books as a chld. I enjoy reading mysteries and scary stories and bring that to my classroom. If my students have a selection to choose from themselves, the greater the chance they will pick up a book and see what it's all about.

You will make it possible for more of my students to open up a book and become engaged in the words they see in front of them. You will allow them to stimulate their minds and actually use their imagination and connect with what they see on a page.
