My Students

The students in our school are predominantly new or developing English Language Learners, some of whom have no prior schooling. They come from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Literacy development can be difficult with limited academic experiences.

Our students are engaged, motivated learners who struggle to make progress due to limited school experience and access to reading material.

When visiting the school library, students are eager to select books, but can sometimes struggle to find engaging books at a comfortable reading level.

My Project

Engaging students as readers is difficult when reading is challenging. For many of my students, the simple act of decoding words and making meaning from them can be so overwhelming that reading is more of a chore than a pleasure.

Graphic novels engage reluctant readers, helping to bridge the gap between the challenge of reading and the joy of reading.

Increasing the availability of graphic novels in the school library will ensure that many more students have access to books that are both engaging to them and accessible as readers. Once students find the joy of reading, whole words will open up for them!
