My Students

Reading is incredibly important for students to build vocabulary, study plot, and practice comprehension. Finding the right book isn't always easy, especially with a diverse group of students who want to read something recent and relevant.

My students are a culturally diverse group of tenth graders living in a high poverty area.

About half of my students are special education students, and many are struggling readers. Despite any challenges they face, they are optimistic about their futures and work hard to accomplish their goals. With the right resources, all students are encouraged to succeed.

My Project

Struggling readers often dislike reading and have trouble finding books that interest them. The novel The Hate U Give is a high interest novel relevant to many.

This novel will grab students' attention, and they will want to read the entire thing!

For students who struggle reading, finishing this novel will give them a great sense of accomplishment.

The novel The Hate U Give is also a great novel to pair with an argument essay. Students can write an argument about banning or allowing controversial books inside schools. This essay would be a fun way for students to practice argumentative writing.
