My Students

Never before have I taught such inquisitive and thoughtful students as those currently in my AP English Language and Composition course. These kids are a remarkable bunch! Their eagerness to dig into text and develop thoughtful written analysis inspires me. They need more text to chew on!

My students hail from the southwest corner of Atlanta.

Most face the many trials that accompany growing up with financial instability in a troubling community. They have heart and drive, and they are hungry for challenging, relevant text. Meeting each of them at the nexus of their interests and abilities is a challenge to say the least but absolutely necessary in order to guide their progress towards greater written expression in my AP English Language and Composition course. Our school is a Title I school, and over 88% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Many people are familiar with the stereotypes of inner-city education, but behind the grit are students who are capable and caring, sometimes needing only opportunity and a little accountability to come into their own. By no fault of theirs, our district has faced incredible budget cuts, and access to quality print materials is hard to come by.

My Project

These two titles are high-interest, high level text with lots of rhetorical choices to analyze. Persuasive strategies, changes in point of view, logical reasoning - it's all here! Understanding and critiquing non-fiction is an essential part of adult life in a literate society, let alone an essential skill for success in college. These two titles will give my students more practice defending, challenging and qualifying written argument and analyzing non-fiction narrative. They've already blown through the titles I normally teach in a school year. Help us finish strong with two new books to call our own!

Your donation will give my Advanced Placement student a chance to read, analyze and write about relevant, high interest non-fiction writing.

Your donation will catalyze a love of literacy already present in my high-achieving kids. Your donation will bring the power of rhetoric into their eager hands. Thank you for considering a donation to my awesome AP class!
