This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are all 14-18 year old ELD students, which means they are learning English and are in their 2nd year of our ELD high school program. My students are kind, hardworking, and silly.

They have all been through trying, if not traumatic, experiences upon leaving their home country, and yet, they walk in every day with smiles on their faces and an eagerness to learn.

My students need an engaging, relevant, and accessible chapter book to read as a class; the book I've chosen speaks to the teenage immigrant experience--it is a highly engaging memoir from an immigrant author who prevailed against all odds. I know this book will be a challenging read, but with thoughtful planning and instruction, my students will be eager to read, learn a multitude of words, and share their own journey and aspirations.
