My Students

I teach in a rural school district in Western Pennsylvania where most of my students are living in poverty. Despite their challenges at home, our school is made up of an amazingly positive group of kids.

My class consists of students who read significantly below reading level.

Although many of them struggle with reading, they still come to school energetic and eager to learn. They start off their day focused and engaged, but as their classes progress, at times, they get fidgety, overwhelmed, and need breaks and movement to help them stay focused and able to concentrate.

My Project

These materials will help my students in two ways in allowing them to be able to sit at their seats and wiggle, bounce, and move their feet while filtering out harsh florescent lighting to create a calm, relaxing environment.

Research shows that a neurological pathway connects are brain's ability to focus, with our environment and body's movement and balance systems.

By using the exercise balls and foot fidgets, they will be able to maintain focus while working on their reading skills. Emerging research is also showing that lighting has a significant impact on our ability to focus and stay relaxed. The harsh lighting found in our school, has been shown to increase agitation, anxiety and off-task behavior; therefore by installing the filtered light covers, a more relaxing environment will be created.

Through using both the flexible seating options and the light filters, students will be able to increase their ability to focus while working on bringing their reading and writing abilities up to grade level.
