Relax, Read and Reboot Science Literacy

Help me give my students comfy chairs and new science books for our Science Literacy Center. We would also love to have a subscription to Scholastic's "Science World," to stay up to date on current advancements in science.

My Students

My students are 9th and 10 grade Physical Science Honors and Biology students. They are eager and anxious to get hands on with science this year. Many of my students are not on their grade level for reading. My school is a Title 1 school that serves students of low socioeconomic backgrounds. I believe that reading current articles and books on science topics will help them to connect reading and science. It will help them to identify science terminology and vocabulary that will be on the Biology state exam they take next year.

Leisure reading should feel comfortable for students, not forced.

Our classroom is a safe place and I want to create a space that will be comfortable for all students to have reading time.

My Project

I noticed that in many high school classrooms the comfortability factor is often neglected compared to elementary school settings. There is often no dedicated comfortable reading area. Many students struggle with reading in my classes. I want to facilitate a safe, comfortable reading space in the class that will welcome those students to want to read more. I want them to connect to the many science terms and concepts that we learn in class. By choosing books of various grade levels, it will be inclusive to many students.

We want to stay connected to current issues in science and show student's how science can be valuable in many aspects of their lives.

Although reading may not come as easy to some students, I believe that encouraging reading in subjects outside of English or Language Arts can help to spark and build students skills, and interest in reading.
