Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 8th grade special education students. They absolutely love graphic novels and read alouds when they can hear voice and get really invested in the story.

When my students have visuals to supplement their learning, their engagement instantly grows.

This is exactly why they love graphic novels. This will also benefit their learning because if the class is able to read this text together, we can have more meaningful conversations around the same text, while also ensuring understanding and reading.

My Project

With this book, we will be able to have in depth book club discussions where students take on different roles as we read. This will increase engagement, purpose, and responsibility as we read.

Students will be able to see a protagonist of color and learn more about the the struggle of maintaining identity when torn between two settings.

Students will be able to write about their reading and write a literary essay comparing this text to the popular film, The Hate You Give, to compare common themes and struggles students of color face daily when they are in a different setting.
