My Students

My students are fun, resilient, caring, and eager to learn. They are all unique and lovable in their own special ways. They live and grow up in a low income neighborhood and go to an inner city school. Each year we struggle to maintain a budget to provide adequate supplies for students and teachers. Our school adopted a new math program that calls for rekenreks--which we do not have. Rekenreks help student improve in building number sense. "They provide students with a concrete, physical object to help develop and deepen their understanding of numbers. Students build a strong sense of 5 and 10, learning about the relationships among numbers and operations along the way."

My students want to learn and with the necessary materials, they can.

It will also help me teach more effectively if students have access to the needed materials. This will not only provide the hands-on experiences for students, it will also help them to learn to use math tools to solve problems.

My Project

Students will be using the rekenreks along with other math tools to learn from home. Our math program asks that we utilize the rekenrek to learn basic numbers and simple addition and subtraction. We will use the 2- colored beads on the rack to learn to count to ten, while moving the beads. We will also learn to add and subtract up to ten by maneuvering and manipulating the 2 colored beads. Students will be actively engaged and participate with eager as we solve math problems together using our new gadget. Before students can move to the symbolic paper-pencil, and then the abstract mental math, they need plenty of practice solving the problems in concrete, tactile ways. The rekenrek will be an important tool that will be used frequently in Kindergarten.
