Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love to take learning into their own hands and thrive when given leadership roles. It creates a rich learning environment and allows space for students to express creativity, successes, and failures.

When my students become the leaders in their learning, they become truly engaged in the process.

They love to showcase what they know and help teach each other, creating a spirit of collaboration and camaraderie. I get to see that they truly want each other to do well and it's a wonderful thing. Right now, we are focusing on simple resources to help them engage in daily learning like notebook supplies. We thank you so much for your help!

My Project

Throughout my years of teaching, I began to notice the lack of creativity that was present in the notes my students were given/taking. This was also accompanied by a lack of organization. Occasionally there would be some students that got creative with colors, headings, etc. But overall, a notebook was something just to copy down what was on the board and stuff loose papers into, never to be looked at again after the school year ended.

My students need tools to help them creatively express and organize their ideas.

To align with the student-centered education, they need tools to empower them to take ownership of their learning. I believe that creating interactive notebooks where students can design, doodle, and organize on their own is the best way for students to take notes. The supplies to start students are simple: pencil boxes full of organization tools like rulers, sticky notes, highlighters, etc. I've experienced using this technique first hand at a teacher PD, and it really did make a difference in the way I engaged in taking notes and recording ideas.
