Reinforcing Reading

My students need fluency lessons for the overhead, blank overhead transparency film, a timer while they work together to discuss reading passages copied on overhead transparency sheets, and hand pointers to help children follow along and be used to model reading fluently.

Are you able to help my fourth graders become better readers? I am a special education teacher at a high-need community school in Canarsie, Brooklyn. While we're equipped with plenty of eager minds, 29 in my class to be exact, my classroom is lacking in some essential supplies that would really improve daily reading instruction.

I teach an inclusion class with fourth graders from the general population and students with special needs mixed together. While I'm constantly addressing varying ability levels through group-work and individualized instruction, I've found that my students need more examples of 'how to' read and comprehend. Presently, daily reading instruction often consists of a short read aloud and discussion of the weekly skill, copying this concept into student notebooks, and applying this concept on a worksheet. While I do go over the answers and try to elicit responses as to how the students arrived at their answers, oftentimes I find that many are still confused as to how a particular question directly relates to something specific within the reading passage.

The answer to improving reading comprehension and creating more fluent readers is more shared reading in which the reader can SEE how 'good readers' read. I recently visited another school in which teachers model good reading through a shared reading experience daily. With overhead transparency sheets and a small pointer students can SEE the passage while the teacher MODELS good reading habits. Using these write-on overhead sheets, teachers can show how they go back into the passage, find, and underline answers to comprehension questions (using different colors for different questions). I am very excited about the prospect of sharing reading more easily and often with the children in my class. While I have an overhead projector that would be perfect for this daily endeavor, I don't have many transparency sheets that can run through the copier or printer like my students' worksheets.

Multipurpose transparency sheets are expensive (about a dollar each) so even though I bought a box, I hesitate to use them as often as I'd like. Also, if you decide to fund this project, you will be providing my students with an overhead timer that will be used as students read and answer questions in pairs. While this will help all my students, those with time management issues will benefit most in pacing themselves to complete the assignment before we review it together. Please DO consider helping the children in my class become better readers. If you can understand the NEED presented in this proposal, perhaps you can remember a teacher that helped you to read and understand. Thank you for your consideration to support the needs of my students by supporting my aspirations and passion for teaching reading.
