Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I teach at a Title I performance improvement school with the majority of our students participating in the free lunch program. For many of my students, school is where they have access to books, supplies, and other resources that support their academic achievements. Many of my students come from homes where their parents are working hard to make ends meet and want their students to be successful in school.
My second graders are inquisitive and love to learn, and they inspire my teaching every day!
And whenever possible, I like to tap into their interests as a starting point for their learning; this project will be that type of opportunity because I know that my students love to go to the park with their families. The best part is that this project will allow me to assess their learning in history standards, math, engineering and language arts while having fun imagining, creating, and working with their parents and students from our fourth grade class--some who are siblings to my students.
My Project
My students do not know the history of our neighborhood park, how it has connections to the entertainment industry and how it was a home for a small collection of animals from the 1880s until the early 1900s before our city zoo was founded in 1912. And who knows what our neighborhood park will become in 30 yrs? This is where the fun and creativity will begin.
Our Neighborhood Park Design Challenge will integrate Math, History and Language Arts and give my students an opportunity to work over several weeks with their families, including some who have siblings in our 4th grade classes.
Using primary sources and articles, my students will learn about our park's history. My students with their families will collect data at the park to see how most people use the park and sketch the park's features; my students will then survey their families and members of our community to learn what they would like the park to be for our community. With our group data, my students will then compare how the park was used then and now, before being challenged to reimagine our neighborhood park of the future. Parents will also be invited to help in our classroom when my students are creating their models throughout the entire project; fourth graders will come and teach my students how to add lights to their models and about solar energy. My students will then build their final models with the legos, squishy circuits, and diorama people and trees requested in this project, as well as use found items from home & school, e.g. boxes, tape, sticks. My students will present their final models at an after school reception where their families and community members will be invited to attend.
