My Project

Hello, Everyone. My name is Marisa Carr, and I am the Speech-Language Pathologist at LMS. I work in a self-contained setting with students with intellectual and physical disabilities. We've created this project to design our sensory room for our Specific Learning Academics (SLA) and Participatory Level Academics (PLA) students. These students require extra strategies and support to regulate their emotions effectively. With large classroom sizes, it can be difficult for students to regulate their emotions appropriately and find a "safe space". We are looking to create a room where students can go with adult supervision to re-regulate and meet their sensory needs appropriately. The items listed in this project will provide safe seating, and sensory stimulation for each student's need. In our SLA and PLA programs, one of the components of their curriculum is social-emotional learning. We are looking to teach them strategies to self-soothe, as well as ways to manage "big" emotions safely. With managing their emotions, comes learning how to request the sensory room. When is it appropriate to go? When do I request a break? These are all questions we will be assisting the student with to learn to advocate for their emotions. Our goal for this project is to provide a safe space for all students to feel their emotions. We want our students to grow and effectively communicate their emotions, wants, and needs. You will see several visual aids in our project to help our non-verbal students communicate. We want everyone to have a voice and feel heard in the comfort of the sensory room. Our students are so incredibly kind and sweet and would be willing to help anyone. With this sensory room, they will only increase their emotional intelligence.
