Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our high school is extremely diverse--one of the most diverse in NYC. This creates for a beautiful student body and also means we have an incredibly wide variety of needs but meet those needs with the same resources as every other school.

We have recently received an influx of immigrants, many of whom are refugees, who do not speak English; I cannot imagine what these kids have survived and they cannot even tell me because I do not speak their language and they do not speak mine.

After fleeing their homelands, they now sit in classrooms where they cannot communicate and I have no resources to help them feel welcome. I fear that not only do they not feel wanted here, but that they will lose the incentive to come to school.

My Project

Imagine fleeing from your homeland because civil war and famine have forced you and your family out. Imagine living across the planet, in a foreign country, with no ability to communicate your needs, let alone your trauma. You cannot say that you are hungry, need to use the bathroom, or even ask how to get home because you do not speak the language and very few people speak yours. You do not know if you are welcome and you are afraid. This is the reality for many of my students.

I want my kids, all of my kids, to know that they are welcome in the USA and that they will find success in this country--starting in our school.

I am creating a language exchange program which will provide an opportunity for my English speaking students to help welcome and appreciate our new students by learning some Arabic and provide all of our English learners with some effective tools to acquire English skills essential for success. While I am beginning with an Arabic language exchange, I plan to open the program to other languages where resources are scarce including Bengali. Currently, we have no such programs--our new-comers are struggling and our other students are frustrated that they cannot help.

While this program has obvious immediate and practical implications, the bigger picture is that it will help bridge a cultural divide, break down stereotypes, and help our kids learn to appreciate people from other cultures. Our country so desperately needs this.

We need copies of Rosetta Stone software to help our students communicate their needs!
