Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach Science to all 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade students in a school in an urban community. Most of my students are from families with a low socio-economic background. I have been teaching my students the Amplify curriculum and following the Next Generation Science Standards. The Amplify program has some materials for students for each unit for each grade band. Unfortunately, there are materials that teachers must supply on their own. For example, I was teaching my 3rd-grade students the lifecycle unit, and one lesson required that they buy, feed, and maintain mealworms for each group of four students to learn about the lifecycle of mealworms into darkling beetles. Another lesson in 3rd grade asked the teacher to buy and maintain earthworms. However, the earthworms needed to be kept in a refrigerator.

Many 5th-grade lessons required students to experiment with ice cubes, ice-cold water, or putting a cup in a refrigerator when students were doing labs from the Earth Systems Unit Once again I needed a small fridge when my 3rd graders were doing the Weather and Climate lessons.

They had to do several labs that required measuring the temperature of a room, cold and hot water. There have been many more occasions when I needed a refrigerator for lessons. To do the lesson I had to buy bags of ice and then store it in the first-floor staff lounge. I had to run downstairs to get the ice or send a student or teacher aide to get it for me.
