My Students

Who are my students? The majority of my students are coming from low-income households where English is not the main language spoken. Because their parents sometimes have multiple jobs and are not around, my students do not necessarily receive the educational support that they need. Without support, they have fallen behind in math and English.

Students at my school start 9th grade feeling defeated.

Many of them have not been successful in a math or English class since elementary school. However, they finally receive the support they need at my school. We provide them with many opportunities to get the help they need. Once they start taking these opportunities, you can see their fixed mindset about learning change into a growth mindset.

I am a proud 9th-grade math teacher. It is amazing to see so many of my students start school at a 4-5th grade level and end up passing Algebra 1 on their first try.

My Project

In my classroom, I use a lot of visual aids to help my students access the math concepts. Therefore, I use colors on my front whiteboard and the students use colors on their own individual whiteboards to be able to focus on various parts of the lesson. For example, I might write the word slope in one color, the change in y in one color, and the change in x in another color. Then when we do an example on a graph, I use the corresponding color so they can see the connection. The markers I am requesting will help with these lessons.

In my last project, we requested a new printer, however; my school will not pay for the toner.

Therefore, we need new toner cartridges and paper to be able to keep printing the materials they need.
