Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a Physical Education teacher and service all students in the building. During my off periods, I spend time with students talking about various issues and I use that time to conduct mediation, mentoring, crisis intervention, and restorative practices. I have noticed that many students are dealing with other underlying issues which caused them to have outburst. There are times in which teachers, another student, or other issues triggered the situation. During the pandemic we have a lot of students who were affected by this and need extra support. Students were out of the building for almost 2 years and getting back in the building triggers a lot of anxiety, depression, and even the ability to adjust and deal with fear. Many of the students are needy, homeless, exploring, from broken homes, and home situations where self-express is not accepted. Some of these students have no outlet or ways of expressing themselves or dealing with intense emotions. I believe creating a room in which they can reflect and de-escalate and gather themselves before their emotions spiral out of control would be ideal.

My Project

When students find themselves in the crisis, they often need an outlet or a place where they can be free and open with their emotions before explosion. Before addressing the situation, the students will get the time to calm themselves. The students will sit in a space decorated with the bean bag chair surrounded by the ambiance of the lighted backdrop curtain and the area rug. They can take a sensory motor toy from the storage under the table to calm themselves. Students can do this while listening to the sounds and smell radiating from the Oil Diffuser. Afterwards, the students and I or any adults in the space can discuss the reason for their emotions and actions while they are in the room and then use the cards to help them reflect before sending them back to class or lunch. This will help them manage their emotions and learn effective ways to manage stress.
