My students need books that allow them to become engrossed in the ranging trials and testimonies of protagonists to which they can culturally relate.

My Students

The 23 students who walk into my classroom door every day do so with a sense of curiosity and anticipation. They desire experiential knowledge gained from fascinating investigations. They long for the types of rich learning experiences that they can go home and brag about to their siblings. My students come from a wide range of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, yet they collectively possess a desire to explore new and interesting concepts. My students are inquirers both in school and outside of school, and welcome the opportunity to communicate their unique perspectives, while listening to the ideas of others with an open mind.

Though the desire for dense understandings is shared by my students, their range of interests expands from unicorns to tornados and beyond.

They are eager to share their preexisting understandings on topics they know far more about than I do myself. They want to share the unique facts, stories, and teachings they know with both myself and the community of peers who share the classroom space. My students are so proud of who they are, where they come from, and the talents they have to offer.

My Project

Student surveys have shown that far too many children have developed a distaste for reading. I strongly believe this is because they have not been exposed to books that generate a sense of excitement and passion. My students need access to books that captivate them, books that they can't put down as they flip through page after page in anticipation of what possible outcomes may be approaching. As a first year teacher, my classroom library has predominantly been created using books that I read as a child. These books are aging and, more often than not, fail to relate to my students' life experiences.

I distinctively remember when I first received Dinosaurs Before Dark, the first of the Magic Treehouse Series, and the love for reading that soon blossomed.

I was a reluctant reader who lacked confidence in my abilities, but this book alone generated a personal desire to explore the contents of more and more books throughout my childhood. The books I am hoping to fill my library with contain characters, storylines, and settings to which my students can find personal connections with. These books contain a diverse range of characters, plots, and adventures that could potentially spark a love for reading. As stated, my students desire to become absorbed in rich academic experiences, and I believe these books will demonstrate that amazing discoveries can be made within their pages and within books that fill shelves around the world.
