Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"This is real life, teacher!" I hear this far too often. My students face real struggles. Crime and drugs have had a negative impact on their community. I try to teach them to rise above these challenges. I hope to create a venue for showing films and slide shows that document hopeful futures.

Our students come from a poverty stricken community in New York City.

Most students come to us from shelters or housing projects. Our students who have emotional support from their families are still challenged by environmental obstacles in the community. Crime, substance abuse and drug selling is a community ill that effects the social climate throughout the school and community. Many of our students can barely envision safely completing school, let alone becoming college and career ready. They remind me often of their real life struggles and for them, thoughts of a better future seem distant. Our school building is old and funds have moved to a growing number of charter schools in the community. With few resources, our school has tried to improve the physical character of our building. In the last two years we have painted murals, inscribed inspirational sayings in the building and we have planted a terrace garden. But we still need more positive images to support our kids!

My Project

I am requesting a new projector screen for our school auditorium. This school space should be a place to celebrate student success! Award ceremonies, graduations, slide shows and films should be shown here. Currently, our projector screen is badly damaged. It is my hope that we can get our auditorium up to the 21st century. Our students have seen block bluster films showing violence and guns, they have seen Disney endings which they know are make-believe, and they may have seen a few talk shows on T.V. outlining hope. But, few students have seen their own successes memorialized and documented on the big screen. It is my hope that we can provide our kids with large scale images of their own accomplishments. Also, we can show them real documentary films showing hope and brighter futures. Lastly, we could use the large projector screen for family events and tutorials. We could open up our school to more community programs that could utilize this auditorium space in a positive way.

This new projector screen is an important resource to our school because it will provide the venue to celebrate our students' accomplishments.

The appearance of the new screen will make our students proud. It will help to validate their efforts toward success. They will actually be able to project their hopes and dreams. They will see themselves presented in "Reel Life". We hope their projections will be their reality!
