My Project

All Facts: More and more teenagers use TikTok as a search engine instead of Google and Wikipedia! Teenagers' opinions about historical figures, cultural identity, racial differences, and current conflicts are heavily influenced by Instagram Reels and TikTok as much as by background knowledge and state curriculum.

Help give our social studies students microphones, tripods, and lighting to make short-form vertical videos (TikToks) about World History, Government, and Economics.

As teachers, we love to do group projects. We often do posters or presentations. But teenagers nowadays spend hours "consuming content" in 15 to 60 second "Reels" or "TikToks" that often do the same thing that we want our collaborative projects to do: research a topic, structure an argument, and convince the audience in an engaging way. So why not meet the kids where they are? On their phones, with tripods, mics, and lighting!

In World History, students are about to study Greece and Rome. They can list the top 10 contributions (all in the standards) and how they influenced the modern world. Imagine: students filming with microphones themselves talking about democracy and Plato while using the CapCut green screen effect with ancient Athens in the background. In Government, our teachers are looking at Democracy around the world. Imagine a group of Afghan and Pakistani students making narratives about their own experiences, with clear sound from the microphones, nice professional lighting, and a bag to keep everything safe. The possibilities are endless!

Teenagers are so focused on becoming the next viral stars or influencers. In order for us to stay relevant, especially with populations who do not automatically buy into the value of a traditional school education, we need to meet them where they are at! Making high quality videos in social studies projects is exactly where they are!
