This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
They say great things come in small packages and that is the case with my students! My students are tiny elementary students who live, dream, eat and sleep music! They are animated, energetic and absolutely adore making music together! We are a STEAM magnet, inner city school full of extremely talented students. Many of our students do not have access to music lessons or instruments at home, so our school is the only exposure that they get.
Our program is not fully funded by the district so we rely on donations to keep our program going.
My Project
In order for my students to make those beautiful sounds they must have not only their instrument but a required set of "disposable items". Reeds are what produces the sound in woodwind instruments and they only last for a short amount of time. I like to keep a stock pile at school to give to my students that are in need so they will not have to miss out during class! This will allow my students 100% participation everyday, even if a reed emergency happens in the middle of class!
My students often come in with broken or chipped reeds because their parents either do not have the financial means to constantly replace reeds or do not have the time to get to the store.
I want all of my students to be able to have the same opportunities to be successful. Being able to help my students in need makes a tremendous difference not only in their ability to learn but also in their everyday lives.
