This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are mostly minority students and most of them come from a low-income family background. They are very active and enjoy coming to school and learning science.
They are always ready to learn new skills and explore new opportunities but the unavailability of resources makes it hard for them to understand some of the abstract concepts that I teach, therefore the need to explain the concepts in ways that makes it real, captivating and interesting becomes imperative.
My students enjoy completing class projects that involve hands-on experiments, programming, art and research which helps them express their understanding of chemistry concepts in their own way by creating new meanings to their discoveries.
This project is about teaching my students the importance of minimizing waste by using catalytic reactions. Catalysts are chemicals that are less hazardous to human health and the environment because they are less toxic to organisms and less damaging to ecosystems. Catalysts are effective in small amounts and can carry out a single reaction many times. They can be used to oxidized waste and reduce its mass. My students would learn how this type of chemical reaction could be used to reduce pollution and amount of trash in the environment.
My students would use the Triple beam balances to measure the mass of a chemical substance and then add a known catalyst to the chemical compound and allow it to oxidize thereby, degrading it.
This process would help my students understand how to preserve the environment by reducing air pollution.
The mass of the chemical compound is measures after oxidation and the two masses (before and after) would be compared.
This project is very important because it would help my students understand the importance of catalytic degradation of waste, and its benefit to the environment since it reduces the amount of pollution and waste in the environment.
