Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a 3rd grade teacher at a small K-8 charter school. Our charter is to include arts education with the standard elementary/middle school curriculum. Our students largely come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. Well over 50% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunches.

It is challenging to truly open up kids' minds to the urgency of recycling. They are growing up in a world where the mounting issues of garbage and limited resources are becoming critical. Global Warming is something all children should learn and be concerned about. It is something which will most definitely affect their lives. Indeed many are familiar with the issue, yet even so our campus is littered and lunches are tossed out without regard to composting and recycling.

Kids love making movies. They love to see themselves up on a screen. And when they are engaged in a project, the learning goes deeper and sticks. If we had a video camera at our school, kids could make P.S.A.'s and share them with other classes. The projects would be more meaningful because of the excitement around making and "starring in" real movies. Other students would benefit when the movies were shared. We could even go 'on the road' and share our P.S.A.'s with classes from other schools! There is a great potential here. Our P.S.A.'s could eventually cover a great range of issues relevant to students. Besides environmental issues, problems of school bullying could be addressed, for example.

Video cameras are expensive and fall well-outside of our school's discretionary spending budget. Your donation would give my students the opportunity to shoot and create P.S.A.'s, thereby helping them to raise awareness in our school, as well as in our neighboring schools.
