My Students

It is important for everyone to do their part in protecting our earth, even my 9 special education students! However, they won't be able to learn without the hands-on materials and experiences you can help provide.

My 9 amazing students have Autism and Intellectual Disabilities.

We are a self-contained functional skills classroom in a regular public school facility. Our school is a high poverty, title one school, so getting materials for my students can be quite difficult. Each one of my students requires an individualized curriculum that I must create depending on their level of functioning. I like to combine academic skills with functional life skills whenever possible. By helping me obtain the materials I have requested, I will be able to complete differentiated lessons on The 3 R's that will meet the needs of all of my students!

My Project

This years Earth Day activities came and went and I'm not sure my students were able to grasp the lesson objectives, the way they could have if they had hands-on materials and real life experiences. Reduce: I am asking for Decorate-Your Own Tote Bags. These bags will be an incentive for the students who bring in the most plastic bags each week. Reuse: I am asking for reusable travel mugs for my students to use this spring and summer instead of the usual plastic water bottles. Recycle: I am asking for 3 recycling bins so I can set up a classroom recycling center. The students will be in charge of sorting items, depending on whether they are paper, plastic, or aluminum. I have also requested some educational materials so I can provide hands on lessons that will stress the importance of taking care of our earth. These items include the Earth and Environment Theme Box from Lakeshore and a hands-on sorting task for continued skill practice.

I want my students to become responsible members of our community despite their disabilities!

They are fully capable of learning the importance of reducing waste, reusing everyday items and recycling materials. These are life skills, lessons and habits that everyone should develop. Please help me help my students learn the importance of the 3 R's!
