Help Ms. McManus

I am the media coordinator at a small, rural elementary school in a low socioeconomic area. We have approximately 315 students in Grades K-5, with 70% receiving free and reduced lunch.

Many of our students are unaware of the importance of using "Green" practices to help conserve our Earth's resources. Being in a rural area, it takes extra time and effort at home to recycle when there is no curbside pick-up. The students learn about the 3 R's (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) at school during Earth Week, but forget them during the rest of the year. It's time we teach our students to be responsible citizens year round! I hope to start a new culture of environmental responsibility throughout our school.

To begin our schoolwide Green Initiative, I plan to start a recycling program in the cafeteria. As an introduction, students will watch the Recycling DVD and participate in the recycling lessons included in the Recycling VideoLab Kit. Students who purchase beverages in cans and plastic bottles in the cafeteria will begin recycling them. If students get in the habit of recycling at school, they will be more likely to encourage their parents to recycle at home as well.

With your help, we can instill in our students the importance of being "Green Citizens." They will carry with them what they learn today for the rest of their lives.
