My Students

Recycling is an important effort in protecting the renewable and non-renewable resources of our planet. Students must be educated on the importance of recycling. This project seeks to educate students on the importance of recycling using hands-on activities designed to raise students' interests.

I have a classroom of 20 fifth grade students, 10 girls and 10 boys.

Our school is a small, rural public school located in North Carolina. We have an interesting blend of personalities in our classroom, which can make for lively discussions and lessons. My students have limited educational opportunities outside of the classroom, as many come from economically disadvantaged homes. Many have only started recycling efforts this year and need more education on the types of products that can and cannot be recycled.

My Project

The resources selected for this project will serve to entice students' interests in our school-wide recycling effort and encourage them to practice recycling habits at home. Using hands-on activities, students will focus on renewable and non-renewable resources found on our planet. They will examine a biological display of recyclable products and learn the meaning of recycling symbols. Students will also study comics providing information in a variety of environmental science areas, including recycling and waste disposal, pollution, deforestation, and energy and raw material sources. All of the resources will combine to provide a comprehensive approach to educating students about the importance of recycling.

It is our responsibility to educate students on how to protect the renewable and non-renewable resources found on Earth.

This project seeks to encourage students to actively participate in protecting our planet by learning about the importance of recycling and by practicing daily recycling habits. Without this education, many of my students would remain unaware of what products can be recycled and might otherwise dispose of them with regular classroom and/or household trash.
