I am a second-year teacher in District 75, New York City's special education district for students with severe disabilities. My third-fifth grade students with autism have a wide range of interests and abilities, and for many of them, movement activities are an effective way to learn and socialize. I try to make time for them to visit the schoolyard every day, even if it is only for ten or fifteen minutes. For some of my students, it is just what they need to work some energy out and be able to focus on their afternoon work. For all of them, it is an ideal time to learn to take turns, share, and work together. Unfortunately, we do not have any classroom balls or other recreation equipment to play with outside, though these resources provide a great opportunity for my students to ask peers if they would like to play and then carry through with a game. A few pieces of recreation equipment would do wonders for my students' socialization and gross motor skills. I appreciate your consideration.
