My Students

My Students are a part of the NYSAA (New York State Alternate Assessment) program known as ACES.

These amazing students are a low function population amongst the larger special education population, within a Title I school.

Many of my students, though in High School, cannot read beyond a first grade level. As a Social Studies and Reading teacher, it is my job to bring them a traditional high school curriculum in a way that they can understand. It is a challenge to keep them interested in a topic for long periods of time, so many of our topics are extended over many weeks. They are a part of a work study program as well. They gain both life skills and academics in one place. This helps them to gain a better sense of life after they leave our program. They have the opportunity to stay in this program until they are 21, meaning many of my students will be with me for 8 years. This also causes a challenge because granted many of them do not retain info for that long, I still must recreate the curriculum each and ever year.

My Project

My students love to be apart of their learning. Many of them are both kinetic and visual learners. What better way to learn history then to reenact the stories of our countries past. With the green screen, they can act out the scenes that they choose from the chapters we are covering in class. A green screen would make them feel as if they were really in the movies, since green screens are used in so many of their favorite movies today. From there they can use the iMovie maker software to create the backgrounds to help put their historical movie together.

With the use of the projector and screen they can teach their fellow students a piece of history in a way that they maybe able to grasp.

They will be able to show their own historical movie to their fellow Classmates. This will help my students in so many unimaginable ways. My students will not only get the chance to learn history in a new and innovative way, but many of them are ENL(English Language Learners) students who can practice their reading and english through acting. The donations to this project will help not only to improve my students' ability to learn history and to read, but also to help them gain confidence. Getting up in front of an entire class and giving a presentation, or acting out a skit can be difficult for anyone. This project will allow them to shine in ways that they could never imagine. I can envision this technology surpassing not only my reading and social studies classes, but used throughout their Science, ELA, Math and Art classes. The sky is the limit for this project, and my students.
