Reading novels is great, but reading isn’t just about stories. One of the most surprising ways to get kids excited about reading is through cooking! Cookbooks offer children a wonderfully fun experience trying out new skills. They also offer children a great literacy experience, since cookbooks are full of instructions that children must follow carefully if they want the food to turn out well. This creates careful readers, who read and re-read instructions to ensure no mistakes are made. It's great practice for young readers. Struggling readers need all the encouragement they can get. Knowing there’s a delicious dish at the end of the recipe is a surefire way to get little chefs motivated to sound out tough words and keep on reading. Paying attention to details will become crucial for older readers, and working through a recipe is a fun way to learn how to do that. I am requesting cookbooks for our school library media center to inspire a love of reading as well as improve reading comprehension.
Our school library does not have a budget at this time. With your support of this project, we will be one step closer to creating a library where students may find a variety of cookbooks that offer yummy incentives for reading, learning new vocabulary, and following step-by-step directions.
