My Students

The children that we serve are predominantly low-income, with 85% qualifying for free and reduced-price lunch. Nestled in southern Harlem, our small school serves nearby children who live in the neighborhood and children who commute. Our students are energetic, creative, and hard-working.

We are a school that includes hands-on projects and units of study in our curriculum.

We believe students learn best when engaged in a rich, inquiry-based curriculum and are offered opportunities to express their learning and knowledge through different modalities. This year, we are teaching in a remote and blended-remote learning environment. We are also preparing for next school year, as we welcome more students back into the building.

My Project

First grade students spent February and March studying Civil Rights activists' biographies in reading. They learned about Rosa Parks, Georgia Gilmore, Shirley Chisholm, the Greensboro Four, and many more. In writing they learned how to write letters, petitions, signs, speeches, songs, and books to convince people to help them solve a problem.

They began to synthesize the information in the books, learning that problems are solved not just with one person but through collective action.

For our culminating project, students and teachers decided that we could improve learning at our indoor recess periods during the next school year (2021-2022). Students came up with a list of materials that would be both educational and fun. They wrote convincing letters and made posters to spread the word.

The new materials will increase engagement during recess time, enrich classroom learning using board games and card games, and offer an opportunity for students to design and create. Indoor recess will be an opportunity for play-based learning, extending the classroom environment.
