This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A second grade class can no longer be classified as a group of 7-8 year olds. In fact, doing so creates the thought that all children are the same and learn in the same style. This can't be any further from the truth.

The students in my classroom are unique, with various exceptionalities that help make this world as multi-faceted as it is today.

My students are a collection of young, breathtaking minds; some with gifted abilities, some with autism, some new to the United States, many are bilingual, some students have traveled to many places while others have never left the city. They are a group multi-cultural students, who live in predominantly Hispanic neighborhoods. Most are computer and smartphone savvy but don't really know much about board games, or playing where they have to socialize in order to communicate.

My students are all different yet one thing remains true...they are students with a loving teacher who demands that they value each other. I try to teach them how to become loving, creative, intelligent adults, who care for their families, friends, community and planet.

My Project

You’re probably thinking this teacher just wants to have fun…and you’d be right. It’s vital to me as an educator of young minds to provide students with various opportunities of “fun” while teaching the necessary skills they will need to succeed.

The days of lengthy recess is over, due to high-stakes testing and drill-skill teaching, but with your help I will be able to provide my students with genuine opportunities of mental growth and socialization through organized free play aka recess.

It has been researched and proven time and time again that recess develops social skills. For many of my students recess may be the only time during the day to engage in free flowing conversations that are essential to language development. This may be the only chance some of my students get for unstructured, natural social development. The cafeteria is NOT recess!

With this recess equipment, I will create an area with games and activities that encourage engagement. Students will feel empowered when they play with the ECR4Kids Jumbo 4-to-Score (Connect 4) Oversized Game. They will gain leadership skills when playing with the Giant Toppling Tower. They will learn simple skills like taking turns while using the Veluxio Adjustable Jump Ropes and following game rules while playing with the Play Platoon Ring Toss Game Set. Students will learn to resolve conflicts, and reduce their stress in an age-appropriate manner. Help me prove that sitting still does not equal learning and that children need time to be children. It really will make the world a better place, I promise. Thank you.
