Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine how a kindergartner would feel when being told that the school where he was supposed to have his "First Day of School" has been severely damaged due to Hurricane Harvey and will be closed for the year. Sadly everything is gone! No small group rugs, no reading nooks, no desks, no materials, no supplies!!! Probably lots of questions are being asked to moms and dads, and many of them haven’t been answered, yet! That’s exactly how many of my students are feeling now after the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. They are just ready to get the school year started!

For the past 18 years, I have been honored to work at a Title I school here in Houston, Texas teaching a primarily immigrant community where 99% of our student population receive free breakfast and lunch.

Most of our students come from large low income families and are struggling English speakers. A majority of our students' parents did not get the opportunity to have a higher level of education, some don't even know how to read or write. Many of our students' families incurred great loss due to the hurricane losing their homes

My Project

For years I have worked hours and hours creating activities to engage my students in recognizing the alphabet, matching sounds and letters, manipulating words through rhyming, and counting syllables in words between others. All of them are important, if not crucial, to develop their reading skills.

I lost all my material due to Harvey, but with your generosity my students will start this school year with a smile in their faces, and motivated to become successful readers, by finding engaging learning activities in a new classroom!

I am requesting phonics puzzles, word builders, letter blocks, story cards, and many more crucial materials to keep my students on track!

My students will be exposed to diverse learning opportunities

each day to engage as many learning styles as possible, ensuring their ESL learning success.
