My Students

I work in a low-income, high poverty school district in Baltimore City, where my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Before our students walk into the school building, they have often already faced numerous different obstacles, most being out of their control. Many of my students are being raised in single parent households, are often in charge of their younger siblings and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. Many of them have experienced traumatic situations as a result of high crime and violence in the neighborhood.

Since returning to in person learning from the pandemic, I am seeing that a lot of my students have not yet built their social and fine motor skills putting them a year or more behind.

The basic skills of holding a pencil and writing your name have been lost on many students. Additionally, students are struggling taking turns, playing games and just enjoying recess. Many are getting into fights and have melt downs because they haven't had time inside the school setting the learn basic social skills and communication. These students have such great potential that requires some additional supports this school year!

My Project

Since student spent a majority of their time learning behind a computer screen, their social emotional development and fine motor skills were negatively impacted. A majority of my teachers in all grades are back to teaching their students how to hold a pencil and write their name. Tool such as play dough, fidgets and fishing games help these students develop the fine motor strength while having fun.

In addition to fine motor concerns, a majority of my students do not know how to play game, share, take turns and express themselves.

Missing time in the early education classrooms, has impacted their social and play skills. These books will be used for both whole group and small group lessons. Providing the students with feelings face mats will help them have a hands on experience learning about emotions. The Little Spot series is an excellent and tangible way for students to learn about behaviors and make connections between emotions and actions.

Lastly, some of my students are struggling with the return to school in general. Sitting for long periods of time is a huge adjustment from laying on a bed behind a computer. Sensory toys, timers and noise cancelling head phones can help student stay focused and learn better. Hands on learning games can help some of my younger students become more engaged in the learning process.

COVID-19 school closures have had impacts on every student in my school and these tools and supplies will help build their capacities as students both in and outside of school. Help me help my students close the gap that was caused by the pandemic!
