My Students

Being a middle schooler is tough as hormones kick in and school hierarchies form. It has been made exponentially harder because of the COVID-19 pandemic. My students have lost a sense of self and community that is taken for granted during in person learning. Our entire community has been affected with higher levels of stress, depression and anxiety in students, teachers, and caregivers.

Our students participating in the Summer Bridge Program come from primarily low socio-economic households.

Most of these students have known someone who was ill with COVID-19, and some have lost a caregiver or primary family member to the illness. However, I believe in the resilience of children when provided with the right support which is what our program hopes to achieve through hands-on activities, experiential learning, and engaging projects. They have been through a lot and deserve a time where learning can be fun again.

My Project

This PA system will help our incoming 8th grade students assimilate back into our school community during our Summer Bridge Program. Our students have spent a year remote learning and have never even been on the Korematsu Middle School campus. This has been devastating to their learning and to their sense of community that is often taken for granted when learning on campus. We are excited to offer a Summer Bridge Program to our rising 8th grade students in an effort to build back that community and leadership for the return to in-person learning this fall.

Community building is something prioritized at Korematsu Middle School, and it is more important than ever to deliberately create welcoming spaces for our students as we return to in-person teaching.

However, much of our instruction will be outside due to continued Covid-19 restrictions and we need a way to engage all 150 Summer Bridge students for morning and afternoon circles. An outdoor PA system will help us engage students with music, announcements, and fun activities
