This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the good fortune to teach Writing to 4th grade ESL students. My school is located in inner city Houston where Spanish is primarily spoken, and English is their second language. While the students are eager to learn, they have many challenges to overcome ranging from poor home environments, dangerous neighborhoods, gang influences, and language difficulties.

School is one place where my students can feel safe and know that the teachers will do whatever it takes to ensure that they get an education that they deserve.

Hurricane Harvey has left a lasting effect on my students and my classroom. I want to help prepare them for the future in order that they will be successful throughout their school years.

My Project

My students would benefit from having 2 laptops available for use in our classroom. Being dislocated after Harvey has drastically changed technology and materials available for use in my classroom. The ease and speed of these laptops will offer my students 21st century technology at their fingertips.

Students today are accustomed to using technology.

The laptops will be available in the writing center. My reluctant writers may be encouraged to write their compositions if they are able to type in on the laptop. My ESL students will be able to access apps which will help them learn the English language. Having the laptops available allows me to appeal to visual learners and provides tactile stimulation. One of the projects that my students will complete this year is a research paper. The laptops will be an invaluable resource when gathering data for the research papers.
