Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"You are the Scientist!" I often exclaim this to my students. They view science as something only done by adults in laboratories. A tablet allows them to collect and display data from their own group inquiry. Allowing my students the ownership of their education.

My students consist of mostly immigrant children.

I have one ESE classroom, one Gifted, and two general education classroom of mostly ESOL students. Our school is a Title I school, made up of mostly low income families. Most rent within the community, and mostly come from single family homes. In the past I have only worked with the Gifted children. This year is especially challenging to me due to the diversity of my students. The gifted students in my class have scored extremely well in science throughout my career. Our school decided to allow me to work with the entire 5th grade school population in hopes of waking a love for science in all our students. I have found a profound need for these students to have someone believe in them. We have worked so hard in teaching them the basics in reading and math, their weaknesses, that they have not explored the world around them. Science and technology has opened up a new path of learning that they are able to succeed in.

My Project

Hands-on learning! This is what the donation of a Windows Surface will bring to my students. A touch tablet that runs Windows yet is lite and easy enough for my students to use when growing plants, doing surveys, labs and countless other investigations. All of this, yet it functions like a lab top, so that I can wirelessly connect it to our TV monitor, Skype, stream and present power points. This generous donation would note only make my teaching more relevant, it would excite and motivate my students. More importantly, it prepares my students to succeed in college and career choices. Further, Windows 8 cloud foundation is flexible, anywhere-anytime learning experience across a range of devices. It is designed to help students and teachers consume and create content, Windows 8 devices are ready for school applications like Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, and OneNote. An important factor when choosing the tablet/laptop for my classroom was the ability to have it communicate.

Imagine a group of 5th graders testing their hypothesis.

As they work out their investigation they create charts, diagrams and take pictures as the changes occur. Together they sit and collaborate as they discuss their findings. Then they create a power point of their investigation to their peers. Simultaneously they share this information to other students outside the classroom. They relate these findings with other real world experiences they find when researching. This could all be true
