My Students

My students are primarily at-risk, low income, struggling readers. My school is a dropout prevention alternative school. Our students typically struggle with reading comprehension and motivation, so we work in small class settings to help give each student what they need.

My students come to our school because a traditional school hasn’t worked for them for one reason or another, and we have been working to implement a more student-centered, individualized learning experience for each student that enters our school.

My Project

My mission this year, and really every year, is to get as many books in my students’ hands as possible! I would love to add more diverse books to hook my reluctant readers, and to do that I would like to be able to offer some cross curricular credit for their other classes. For this reason, I’ve requested several books relating to science and social studies topics. I’ve also requested more diverse books because I’ve noticed a gap in some of the content, and I want all of my students to feel like there are books with characters like them on my shelf. With your help, I am hoping to show my students that they can make very real connections to the books they choose, whether that connection is personal or related to another class. Connections in reading are so important to grow a love of reading and to increase reading skills.
