My students come to class everyday excited to be at school and very eager to learn. The students that I teach have a variety of disabilities and now that they are in high school, our job is to help them become as independent as possible and be ready to be successful in the real world. My students follow our Extended Content Standards track that helps them to learn independence and be successful in a work environment that allows them to use the skills they have gained. Real world activities are so important in our daily routines and practices.
Many of my students are very eager to graduate from high school but they become nervous with what is in store when they leave our classroom.
Our goal as teachers is to prepare them for life skills that will ensure they can be as independent as possible after high school.
My Project
The materials will be used to practice real world scenarios that we will be able to use and refer back to when we take our students into the community setting. We work on reading and math skills, but try to relate it to scenarios and examples that they may face once they leave our classroom. We try to create lessons using materials that are not always copied on paper but with magazines, newspapers and ads. These are the materials that they will see once they leave school. These lessons are also used to help keep their interest while gaining skills needed to be successful outside of the school setting.
