My Project

In physics students do best when they can connect science concepts/phenomena with real life. For this project, that real connection is the economy of solar, battery, and hydrogen fuel cell power options for aviation power plants. As a pilot myself (and a high school physics teacher with at least one student pilot), I have the knowledge and experience to guide students through this exploration, but not the materials. So what will this purchase do for us? This renewable energy equipment includes wind, solar, and hydrogen fuel cell power sources, plus components to connect and modulate other power supplies I already possess (batteries). I already have multimeters to test power output and scales to test thrust.

Students will be able to measure the energy gathered/converted by each source, compare the energy efficiency of each energy source, the cost of the materials, the energy density of fuel sources, consider how fuel/propulsion weight affects gross weight/useful load and in turn, affects the cargo capacity of a plane, the comparable cost of non-renewable energy sources in kWh (kilowatt-hours), calculate the thrust produced by each source, and connect physics, aviation, and finances by learning about the financial pros and cons of renewable energy options with a class set of Renewable Energy Education Sets.

The result of all this is that they can understand the future of electricity generation as it relates to one of our most important transportation sectors, aviation. This will come with the bonus perk of knowing what goes into their energy bill, and how to work out the finances to determine if solar, wind, or hydrogen fuel cells work better than fossil fuel energy sources.
