I teach second grade in a small rural community. A high percentage of these students receive free or reduced lunch. The majority of our students are English Language Learners. Many of our kids live well below the poverty line.
My students are like my children!!!
I love watching my students when they are able to connect what they have learned to a real life situation. It makes them feel like what they are learning is worth it!!! They seem more engaged when the really understand what they are learning and they are excited to take that information home and share with their families.
My Project
These materials will give students a chance to see how what they are learning in school adapts to real life. They have the opportunity to see real photographs and will be able to work on their nonfiction text features.
We can tie these magazines into our curriculum and they will give them the opportunity to work on main idea and details, compare and contrast, and cause and effect; among many other skills.
Students can take these home to share with families. They can practice their reading skills and strategies they've been learning in class. Many students are Ell's and can get all this information in Spanish, when accessing the online page.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
