My Students

My math students are gifted artists who love to learn. As their math teacher, I try to assign hands-on group projects that really get their creative juices flowing. We also try to work through arts-infused math lessons, where the students can paint, write songs, or act out plays. Furthermore, I try to merge their artistic talents with math and science so their gifts can be applied to topics like engineering and design.

The students at my school come from all over the county and are a very diverse mix, both culturally and socio-economically.

Many students come to our school with limited experiences in such open-ended lessons, making our school a safe place to be creative and learn.

My Project

Scholastic math magazines show students how they will use math in the real world. Math is the language of science; but, it is often tricky for students to link what they are learning in math to how they will use it in science or in the real world. By reading vetted news articles, students will see examples of they could use their math knowledge in their future occupations. For example, they might see how finding the area of various shapes relates to architecture and building design by reading one of the interviews in the math news magazine. Hopefully, the latest math news will motivate many of my students to consider pursuing STEM careers one day.
