My Students

"Mathematics may not teach us how to add love or subtract hate, but it gives us every reason to hope that every problem has a solution." - Anonymous. Math is a subject that elicits a wide range of emotions from anyone who talks about it. Math should be a subject loved by all who encounter it.

My students are a diverse group of students at a Title 1 school.

Over 63% of our students are economically disadvantaged at home and participate in free and reduced breakfast and lunch. We also have a high population of ELL students, with over 34 languages spoken by my students. Though there are many challenges and problems that are faced by the students, we strive to make every day the best day and do everything we can to learn. Building a love of learning math is essential for students to be successful in a 21st century world where math is an ever-growing part of life. It is my hope that every student who leaves my classroom can share with anyone they meet about the math that is all around us! Real world math helps bring abstract concepts and algorithms to life with hands-on methods of finding solutions to real dilemmas many people face in their every day life.

My Project

The materials I requested will help students understand how often math is used daily in life outside of the classroom. Bringing in real world elements like gas prices, baseball statistics, and movie ticket prices through engaging math games and activities, will help show students the importance that math has and hopefully encourage that same level of commitment from the students. Math Wrap-Ups will help students build math fact fluency, which will help with daily math calculations in their lives outside of school. Students will play and design games, like the daily math centers and "I Have, Who Has" games, and activities that simulate real math usages outside of school. Students will then teach these games to our elementary "buddy" classroom to help build their math skills and enjoyment. We want positive feelings about math to flow through our school and have math be a class that empowers students for a brighter future.

Your generous donations will help my students feel successful in math and bring the world outside of the classroom inside our walls.

These materials will not only positively impact over 100 students this year, but will also serve many, many more students in the coming years. Your donation will help students live our class mantra, "I can learn anything, I can know anything, and I can BE anything!"
