My Students

They see it on TV, but bringing real life CSI forensics into the class creates a buzz for learning like no other.

Students at my school are predominately Latino and minority students, the majority of which qualify for free or reduced lunches.

Our school is in desperate need of modern science lab equipment. Most of them are completely fascinated by crime scene forensics and I have found it a valuable teaching tool for biology and scientific thinking.

My Project

A gel electrophoresis setup would finally bring a much needed lab tool into the lives of my students by showing them that science is real and within reach. It will inspire them to pursue careers in science and show them that they can improve themselves and help the world around them. I have already completed a forensics lesson to teach scientific thinking, and now moving into genetics students will be able to use the electrophoresis chambers to do even more detective work.

I did electrophoresis in my public school over 10 years ago, and it instantly made science real and tangible to me.

My students need that - they need to be inspired and awed, and DNA fingerprinting is one of those things that we see in pictures and movies, but to actually do it is an awesome experience.
