Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Title I school Dual Immersion setting, 20% students is ELL or Hispanic. My project could benefit 49 students.

My learners are very interested in science; I focus on active learning to engage them through hands-on projects and demonstrations; I believe in kinesthetic learning through physical activities such as building and other hands-on practices to stimulate the brain and curiosity in class and keep their focus even during indoor recess or free time.

Spanish Dual immersion 4th-grade spotlights science. I teach SEEds standards that cover difficult concepts such as different types of energy, for instance, we learn about light and sound. These concepts are abstract and hard to understand with only the teacher's explanation or youtube videos. COVID provided with a lot of video experiences that rarely captivated young minds as much as doing it themselves. I also monitor their anxiety levels and social interactions. I chose to have free time or indoor recess with educational games, from board games, and puzzles, to snap circuits instead of showing a passive movie which was the order of the day at home during the lockdown. I believe in keeping kids busy while working on STEM or STEAM activities too.

My Project

Learning science in most schools is about watching a video with someone doing something. How about doing it? I will teach kids how we can measure light intensity, we will investigate how loud a sound is. They will learn about animal structures and how we can see light through our eyes.

Hands-on activities are engaging and focus the students' interest in science; learning with real scientific instruments and models will enhance the learning experience of 4th graders.

Active learning is not limited to instruction time, recess and free time can be the perfect time to continue fostering curiosity and creativity by building and constructing without a blueprint in front of them.
