Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a special education teacher participating in distance learning with high schoolers, we work on academic, life, job, and communication skills. We spend mornings together, each of us in our homes connected by our laptops! This year has proven to be surprisingly enjoyable as we work diligently on all our subjects through our school's google account. When it comes to REAL fun, however, we've discovered online interactive game sites and current event stories. They have proven to be very motivating for my students and highly informative for me as their educator.

Each step along the way, my students have adapted to our difficult circumstances and the games and current event stories have provided extra motivation for them to turn on their computers each day.

When I recently sampled an upgrade to one of the free game platforms, it “tricked” the kids, by providing enhanced slides with the games. The kids were “playing” a game, but absorbing more information on the given topic .... in addition to being involved in much needed socialization!

My Project

Kahoot! and Time for Kids are proven platforms for distance learners. My students have already benefited from exposure to all of the free services offered by these sites. Having more in depth access with subscriptions, will provide me with richer resources to present.

Kahoot!'s games and slides will provide whole group and individual game experiences and Time for Kids offers a format that mirrors "real world" news sources.

Both subscriptions will also provide me with assessment tools and grading feedback which are invaluable at these times.

Through these tough times, my virtual classroom is upbeat and fun. Having access to richer programs will insure my students continue to attend, but more importantly they will improve their daily school experiences.
