Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My kindergarten class is in the NYC (Special Ed) District 75. My students are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). They all are on the severe end of the spectrum which means, they don’t have language, are in diapers, and are in need of constant support.

At the start of the new year, my kindergarten students need to learn and practice basic life skills.

Developing gross and fine motor skills is vital to my students. They need to develop and practice so they can perform the skills that they have been taught and work on becoming more independent.

Another important concept that students need to grasp at the beginning of their education is the passage of time. These students have not yet experienced recalling of events past, doing something in the present, and conceptualizing future events and projects.

The students who have difficulty speaking/communicating put the most objects in their mouth or have the highest incident of biting. Giving these students a safe alternative allows them to focus more on the task at hand.

My Project

Practicing Arts and Crafts is a developing yet soothing activity for kindergarteners with ASD. Crafting is a fantastic way for student to participate in gross and fine motor skills, eye hand coordination, following directions, listening and waiting. An easel will allow students to individually create projects while learning and practicing colors, letters and drawing with different mediums of paints and paper.

My students also need to start developing an understanding of the concept of day’s, months, season’s, and year.

The consistent practice of these skills with the calendar boards during circle time will allow my students to be interactive, with a clear visual. The students will be working each day with support to ultimately use the calendars independently. The inability to loose pieces with this product is a gigantic plus.

More than half my students are unable to communicate resulting in intense frustration. Biting and putting objects into their mouth is a common reaction. The biting necklaces should address this type of situation.

Having these types of supplies for my students would afford me the opportunity to do so much more with and for my students.
