Teaching first grade in California is a multi-cultural experience every single day. I enjoy the successes and the challenges of this diverse set of students and families.

Most of my first grade students are second language learners. They bring in their own unique cultures and traditions. Finding resources and projects to create a connection between all these wonderful cultures is a challenge I enjoy whole heartedly. Plus, cooking is a fantastic way to teach many mathematical concepts in a friendly, hands-on approach!

Food is one common denominator among all cultures and people. If my students can cook recipes from their own culture plus learn about foods from all over the world, then they can begin to embrace what ties us all together. This project will enable my class to cook one recipe a month; each recipe selected will represent a different region of the world where students come from or whose parents come from that region. The recipes will be easy, tasty, and simple to make for first graders.

When you donate to this project, you are giving my students such an important gift of cooking resources that we don't currently have. You are enabling them to come together as a group, appreciating and celebrating each other cultures and traditions. Having parents also come in to volunteer their time during the cooking project will add another fantastic element to this wonderful experience!
