My students primarily come from an underprivileged population in an urban environment. Many of my students do not have the resources at home to maximize their learning potential. It is my goal, then, to provide them with the best tools and resources possible for the time that they are in my classroom.
I believe that every one of my students can be college-bound, despite the fact that many of them come from families where this has not been a reality.
In order to achieve this goal, my students will need a variety of tools to meet their needs as individual learners.
This is my first year teaching fourth grade, and while I am SUPER excited about teaching this new group of kiddos, I find that my classroom library is lacking in options that are at an appropriate level as well as interesting for my fourth graders.
Through reading, students are able to experience adventures to an infinite number of places and times that they otherwise would not have access to.
This is especially important for low-income students such as those at my school, who do not have as many opportunities to travel and experience new things. I am passionate about instilling a love of reading with every student that I have the privilege to encounter, and that is not an easy task without books in a range of topics to interest various students. It is also important that students have access to books at their "just right" level.
The classroom library set that I am requesting will meet the needs of my students by providing texts at a range of reading levels as well as including various topics and genres that will allow each of my students to find something that he or she is interested in, to help me foster that love of reading. Thank you!
