Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day begins with our class motto "Community of Learners" and any announcements. Then we go into our morning read aloud at the carpet. Teacher reads the story and students are actively listening so they can respond to comprehension questions.

My classroom consist of 15 special education students with various disabilities.

I have a variety of disabilities including: learning disabled students, cognitively delayed students and autistic students. My students come in the morning with a good disposition to learn. My students are from a low income area and most are second language learners. They are always full of energy and ready to learn. Our school has a nurturing environment where students are safe and their Hispanic heritage is respected. Our school promotes college and career readiness skills. It believes that all students can achieve success by working hard to reach their goals.

My Project

My classroom would benefit greatly from these resources as most of my students are beginning readers. It is very difficult for them to work independently as their reading skills are so significantly low. They are still working on letters and sounds to be able to read independently. The CD player and headphones would made it possible for me to have a listening center. The center would help them hear how fluent readers can read a story. The headphones would make it possible for more than one person to hear a story at a time. It will help them expand their vocabulary and thus help to improve their comprehension. They will be able to hear stories in a quiet area without disturbing other students that are working on letters and sounds. They will learn how to be more independent and how to improve their fluency. Students will also build their sight word vocabulary.

Donations to this project will help to improve my students reading skills.

They will improve their fluency and comprehension of text. A listening center will help my students to become proficient readers in the future. As they hear stories read to them it will help build their vocabulary. My students will become responsible independent learners that are college and career ready.
